Let’s start by making our dough.

Salt Dough Recipe

  • 1 cup salt
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 ½ cups water

1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees.

2. Mix all ingredients together and knead until smooth.  Add small amounts water if the dough gets too dry.

3. Roll dough out and shape.  You can use cookie cutters, cups, plastic knives, you name it.  Treat this dough as play dough or clay and make what you want!  Flat shapes or small sculptures work best.

4. Place creations on parchment paper on a baking tray and heat for 1-2 hours or until no longer soft.  Be sure to check the bottom of your creation before you call it done.

Putting it Together

After your Salt Dough Creations are out of the oven and cooled its time to decorate!  This, of course, is the most exciting part.  Take your paint (we used washable kids paint) and let the little one’s go wild.  You can also use markers, acrylic paint, crayons, or anything else you can think of to make your creations colorful.

After the paint dries, take some Modge Podge to seal it.  This way if it gets wet there will be no damage.  Now you can continue decorating if you’d like or move on.  In our case we decided to continue adding decorations and pulled out the most feared craft supply of all – GLITTER!  Yes, we dared it and it turned out as expected, with glitter all over us and the kids and the patio furniture (we never allow glitter usage indoors 😉).  Nevertheless; it was fun and our Salt Dough Creations look great.  You can also try using beads, buttons, jewels, yarn, or anything else you might have on hand – let the kid’s, and your, imaginations go wild.
